Expansion Potential:

Market Growth
Current forecasts indicate that the UK pump market is likely to show a reasonable level of growth of around 2-3% per annum in 2019, reflecting growth in construction, together with continuing significant investment in the power generation sector, which is likely to be a key driver of growth in the UK pumps market. This is initially via investment in new generation gas-fuelled power stations, and in the longer term, from new nuclear build.

Other long-term development opportunities include new technologies such as carbon capture and storage and tidal lagoons. In the water and wastewater sector, however, there is likely to be more emphasis on repair and maintenance rather than new capital expenditure compared with previous Asset Management Programmes. However, investment in flood defence programmes may increase demand for pumps, such as submersible pumps and puddle pumps.

UK Pump Manufacture M&A ‘remains robust’
• The market saw 27 transactions in 2017, and a further 21 deals completed in the first half of 2018 and found that the UK continues to be seen as an attractive market for international acquirers despite Brexit uncertainties
• Strategic acquirers rather than private equity firms accounted for most UK deals in the past 18 months, with corporates such as DS Smith, Mondi and Bunzl all completing major deals in the past 18 months
• Wilo acquired the operating business of the pump manufacturers Weil Pump Company, Scot Pump Company and Karak Machine Corporation in asset deals
• The period of consolidation witnessed in recent years is continuing and in 2019, this has been particularly evident in the water pump market where the world’s largest players, Wilo, Flowrox and AXflow have all been actively expanding their geographical footprint

Pump Manufacture - The Facts & Figures
Economic Importance
• UK Pump manufacturing is thriving, projected 5.9% over the next 5 years
• Rising expenditure for infrastructure development in various regions is expected to have a positive impact on the product market over the next nine years
• Water & waste water treatment was the largest application segment accounting for over 20% of global revenue in 2018
• Pump manufacturers are undergoing a digital transformation by embracing IIoT, big data, and artificial intelligence. These enabling technologies and related transformational efforts are providing pump manufacturers

What is a Water Booster Pump?
A water booster pump is a small mechanical device that is used to maintain water pressure when the controls recognise a lowering of pressure and flow rate. A booster set is often used to improve the water supply in buildings where there is insufficient pressure and flow available or water storage is required.

How do water booster pumps work?
The way that a water booster pump works is simple. Fluid is drawn into the pump from a break tank fed by a mains water supply and water enters through the pump suction into the volute (pump body) where impellers, when activated, generate the flow & pressure. The impellers found within the water booster pump are close tolerance high efficiency that spins at a high rate to boost the pressure of water. The water that enters the system will be delivered at a constant pressure through a varying flow range.

Use of a Booster Pump?
Booster pumps are used to increase pressure within liquid circulation systems, either for specific applications fed by the systems that require the higher pressure, or for increasing the distance the system is required to carry the liquid at the circulation pressure. Booster pumps are typically used in municipal water and waste-water treatment systems. Booster pumps are also used to pump water to higher elevations such as elevated reservoirs, water towers and very tall buildings.

Long Distance
Pumping over long distances requires booster pumps at defined intervals along the pipeline. Normal resistance to flow from friction along pipe walls and viscosity losses, along with increases in elevation, contribute to a gradual loss of pressure along the conduit. Booster pumps are optimized to add enough pressure to maintain the desired flow without boosting pressure so much that it must be overly reduced at the point of use in the flow control valve.

Load Changes
Many municipal water utilities encounter large water-consumption rates early in the morning as people prepare to go to work or school, and then again in the evening as people arrive home, prepare meals, wash dishes, flush toilets, bathe or shower, or do a load of washing. Later, water consumption returns to a low level. Using the boosters during peak hours would be prohibitively expensive. To counteract that phenomenon, booster pumps are used during off-peak hours at a lower electrical rate to pump the water into elevated water towers to supply the required pressure by merit of their higher liquid head. When high demand resumes, the elevated water is released from the towers until the demand period is over, and the process of filling them again during off-peak times is repeated.
